Title: Snow Report 2018
Post by: mumofstig on February 26, 2018, 07:56
It's -1.5C and calm, the sky is very dark, as if it is going to rain  - but what is falling on and off is powdery snow. So far only a light powdering.....

Just a few pretty flakes floating by now & again. Perhaps time to check the supplies & get a good book out.

Doesn't often snow on the Island but we've been given a warning for Tuesday and Wednesday.  It's just very cold and windy here.

And as if by magic my kitchen garden magazine & my 2 new books on no dig gardening arrived in the post, perfect timing 😂

Lots of swirling flurries but so far not a lot. No need to go out now as we have plenty of everything we need, so that probably means we won't get any proper coverage

lots here, the roads are coping well ( if a bus goes on it, it gets gritted), so children at school. Snowed all night and still going. Broken the water on the pond for birds and the chook water and will go out and redo during the day

And it's still snowing!

No more than a dusting here, although it is a bit dark outside just now...

Whatever else we get won't disappear anytime soon with the temperature just below freezing now, and not forecast to get above that until the weekend (and then not by much.)

Since mid-morning it's alternated between brilliant sunshine and heavy blustery snow showers. In the shade there's now 2-3cms of snow, but where it's sunny it's melting fairly quickly despite an air temp of -2C.

We've had a lovely day. Woke up to snow, plenty of sunshine then snowy showers all afternoon. Apart from the not being able to get into the garden, it's been marvellous!

Had about 4+" drop last night, + the gritter forgot to do the "priority 1, super main-road", very quiet this morning, , now there is approx 6+ inches on the garden, (and on the panels, :( :().

Local weather stations are showing -7.7C now and low of -10.6C at 6am  Nothing is stirring so couldn't say that there is any windchill involved in that, 'gusts' of 2mph - nothing like the winds on MetO's forecasts, thank goodness  ::)
The snow we had yesterday morning melted yesterday afternoon, but it started snowing again at dusk. It looks as if there is 5 or 6 inches out there now. It's deathly quiet, can't hear any cars or trains  :)

Title: Re: Snow Report 2018
Post by: JayG on February 28, 2018, 18:26
Our turn today - spring bulb plants just covered, which I reckon is around 4" of snow, although it's been quite windy so the drifts are much deeper than that. Currently -6C with a 'feels like' of -12C.

Was more concerned about a pal from Matlock who was flying out from Manchester to Australia at lunchtime today - he and his partner just made it to the airport in time, and he was quite pleased when I texted him that it's about 25C where he is headed for, with 32C forecast in the next few days (my concern now replaced by jealousy, although the shock would probably kill me!)

At 6.15 it was -5C with wind chill -12C.  A good 8cm fell during the evening/night, and it's still falling.
I was due to travel down to S. Wales today. That'll be postponed until next week now!!

After days of dodging the snow except light scatterings, it has arrived here.  So far just a covering, but we have proper settling snow and fat falling snowflakes, rather than the tiny blow around kind that just pile up in corners.

It is very quiet on the roads for rush hour on a Thursday morning.
Title: Re: Snow Report 2018
Post by: mumofstig on March 01, 2018, 09:06
It hasn't been as cold overnight, staying at -4.5, and still the same now. It's not a nice snow day, though - yesterday was welcome sunshine, today's sky is dark as if there is a lot of rain up there - seems the 'wrong colour for snow' as my Mum used to say  ;)
All we are getting at the surface is a dusting of the light powdery stuff - so far!

There's even white stuff falling from the sky here too!  Only about the third time in the 28 years I've been here that's happened.  It's very fine though and only laying on hard surfaces at the moment.  Very glad I have no reason to leave the house.

Not much fresh snow here today - had 3-4 inches on Tuesday. But drifting and -4c.....

Still we are a lot luckier than 25 miles north of here which has had a foot of snow in places.

Children home for day 3 tomorrow, but 1 school has put work online.
Walked around and told the neighbours that no bin collection and extra can get bagged up and I will tell you when they will come as not everyone has wifi.
Very cold so moved the hen house around to protect from the wind (it is on castors) and treated them to oats soaked in hot water.

Grinling , did they enjoy??

Have had to keep an eye on our hens water, risk of freezing.  Have tried filling 5 litre bucket with hot water and lid and sitting water feeder on top.

South West has been given a Red Warning , stay in doors.

Mrs Tenhens has just read a report on social media that car insurance companies may decline claims if you have a mishap in a Red Warning area.  Best stay in doors.

-2C here in East Midlands, and -10 with wind chill. No further snow overnight but the wind has been very noisy and is absolutely cutting. (I had to put the bin out for collection at 6.15, dressed only in my dressing gown, and I can confirm that it is officially "A Tadge Chilly")

Title: Re: Snow Report 2018

Familiar, albeit not recent dilemma - with some essential supplies running low, I could probably get my car down my road to the main roads but wouldn't be able to get it back to the safety of my drive again. All pavements are bound to be very icy, and the walking route to the nearest supermarket about a mile or so away is also very hilly.

If I think about it for long enough I won't have time to do anything today - perhaps I should just dust off the breadmaking machine and also hope there's a lost cow wandering about which might just happen to need milking.

Title: Re: Snow Report 2018

It will be weeks before we have thawed and dried enough to garden that's for sure. It's deeper than it looks and for the first time this week I've dared to look over the river bridge and contemplate going up hill to see if the plots have left home.
Title: Re: Snow Report 2018
Post by: sunshineband on March 02, 2018, 19:27
Glad we have enough supplies not to need to venture out today... frozen road and then a fair few inches of snow suddenly arrived this afternoon on the top of the ice.

A garage full of reserves and stored veg, a healthily stocked freezer and plenty of flour, yeast etc. Oh, plus the liqueurs too. OK for the weekend  :D

PS I didn't appreciate that a guy swept all the snow out of his flatbed truck right next to my car on the road earlier today. Never seen him or his vehicle before, and a large pile of snow right next to my car door was not great even though I wasn't about to go out in my car. Thoughtless oaf, quite frankly

Our little close had blown clear of snow this morning of what little snow we had had. But this afternoon it started snowing again & we are now well & truly covered. If it carries on at the same rate we will be under rather a lot by tomorrow.

Decided that shank's pony was the safest bet, so tottered my way towards the shops and pharmacist. Nice to escape the involuntary confinement, even though I wasn't exactly spoilt for choice when it came to the local mini-Asda. I'm sure boring normality will return soon, as it hopefully will for everyone else.  ;)
Title: Re: Snow Report 2018
Post by: mumofstig on March 02, 2018, 22:01
My normality is no-where near as boring as this week has been. It's felt like being in a solitary confinement prison, although obviously a comfortable one  :tongue2:
It's been weird, there are lots of things I could have been getting on with, but I've just been hunkered down with my laptop, a couple of books and a box-set of Outlander ooh! I forgot the never ending tea and coffee, as well
If it warms up a bit I might actually feel like moving from the fireside to start redecorating my bedroom

A little snow late evening yesterday, but it's now thawing and the flower beds are beginning to appear. Know what you mean Mum, I was going to tidy up the garden room this week, but couldn't be bothered, I blame it on the "winter blues syndrome", that's my excuse anyway,

More snow yesterday evening & now the promise of freezing fog has cancelled our monthly farmers market & ive decided not to go to my sewing group even if that’s not cancelled. I could walk but I know we’d end up all watching the weather & finish early, plus it would probably take an hour each way in these conditions, I don’t want to slip & break anything, & jeopardise my trip to see my sister on the 13th. So another day at home for me. Can’t say I’ve been bored, few little jobs keep. Getting done, a bit of baking, sewing, reading with out any need to feel guilty.

Storm Emma is still howling, I don't ever remember four days solid of this strength of wind.  We had more snow last night but it feels like the temperature has risen and there is definitely signs that there is a bit of a thaw on.  I am due to go out to dinner tonight with friends, we are still playing it by ear but if the thaw continues and the restaurant is open then we will probably venture there.
Title: Re: Snow Report 2018
Post by: JayG on March 03, 2018, 10:31
Couple of centimetres more snow last night to add to the 3-4 inches already there (not much thawing been going on this week.)

Some of the younger men on the street are busy clearing parallel tracks in the road - think I'll leave the car where it is today and hope for a rapid thaw tomorrow (forecast is more snow changing to rain, which would definitely help if it actually turns out to be true.)
Title: Re: Snow Report 2018

All gone here, just wish the wind would die down as well.  Have lost two fence panels which we've just been out to see what we can salvage.  It's spitting in the wind so I think rain is on its way.

Well no more snow has come down & the freezing fog didn’t materialise, but only a bit of a thaw earlier just enough so some snow slipped off the greenhouse & conservatory roofs, but not all of it. The wind has dropped though but still looks awfully cold out there.

It really isn't thinking about a thaw up here at all. It will most likely be Wednesday before we see any improvement locally and that will be when we start to get icy pavements where people have walked on the snow.

Horsham seems to have dodged a bullet. Everywhere north, east and west of here got hit worse by the snow, but didn't ever have more than an inch on the ground where I live. Noticeably milder today which thawed the snow that fell yesterday, and has now been raining for the last couple of hours which will get rid of any remaining snow. Temperatures forecast to be well above freezing for the next few days.

Light dusting of snow overnight but a thaw in place at 8.a.m. We’ve got the fog that was threatened yesterday though thankfully not freezing. In fact on my trip up to our son’s it was quite mild.
