One great idea I've discovered from this post, is the link to Depression foods!

I can tell you here and now, that the peanut butter, mayo and lettuce sandwich is to die for!

I actually used sandwich spread instead of mayo...

Here's a youtube channel you might find interesting. The presenter, Clara, was in her nineties when the episodes were filmed. She recreates recipes that she and her family used during the Great Depression. She often recounts stories from her childhood at that time. Pretty sweet old lady.

BQ fruit leather is really easy to make. Just purée the fruit, add sugar to taste and pour in a thin layer onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (or a silpat). Leave it in the oven at the lowest setting possible (mine is around 175 or 200 F) and leave the door slightly ajar so the air can circulate. It will take several hours but it's a low maintenance job :). Alternatively, if you have a food dehydrator you can just stick the purée in there.
