What's the view from where you are now?
« on: June 22, 2019, 13:27 »
I'm sat in front of my lovely old desk and just looked through the window to see this view. I'm so lucky and just wanted to share it with you. The roses are called Felicia and have a beautiful scent, there's one of my tubs of Hidcote Lavender which I love, and my retirement bench is in the middle.
Middle lawn with rose hedges. (600 x 450).jpg
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I can see our Albertine rose from here.

A couple of years ago, on good advice from chums here, I bit the bullet and reduced it to just a few stumps about three ft high. Last year is started to heave it's weight around a bit, and we fed it and tied in all the new growth, but this year, it's an absolute beaty, with a proper shape, and hundreds of blooms!

If I stand up though, I see all the cutting back, pruning, weeding, strimming, etc., I have to tackle tomorrow. I might then be able to locate the car which is in there somewhere...

Wow, what beautiful set of roses you have there Mrs B - it must smell gorgeous when you're sitting on your bench!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Our place is very idyllic but I'm afraid we have to move so we're busy getting our home ready for the market. I'm only taking a few plants mainly Hellebores and an Astrantia because I still have plant gift vouchers I haven't used so a trip to our local nursery will be in order. If we get this bungalow there are quite a lot of cottage plants, some acers and conifers, ferns, various types of roses and possibly a Camellia so I think the soil is on the acidic side because there's also a blue hydrangea there so it will be an interesting time. Not only do we have this rose hedge there's also a hedge of Rosa rugosa along the front fence which often stops the passers-by to have a sniff. Like Growster said, roses and some other shrubs need a good cutting back which ours didn't get this year 'cos the chap was extremely busy, and after a good feeding they respond by growing healthy new pliable stems which you can train or just leave them to go their own way. I can't remember seeing any Dogwoods so they'll be on my list for winter colour and possibly Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Snow Queen' with its beautiful white bark. Yorkie, I'm not Mrs. B, I'm GG! Been there before butI  got a lovely reply from the wrong poster!

Sheer poetry, Goosey!

I'm surprised that the yellow Dogwoods here haven't reached you by now!

They're animals, they spread like wildfire and will always announce their presence wherever you need a bit of colour - or not!

These two teenagers were sitting on the fence waiting for their parents to return and feed them. The one on the left was just sitting and letting his wings droop down below the post and the other was having difficulty with itchy feathers.

I love Dogwoods because if you prune then hard to about 1-2 foot they respond by throwing up new stems that turn a lovely colour in winter. If you let any drooping stems fall onto the surrounding soil they will take root very quickly, but if you have the space you can easily dig them up to re-plant wherever you want. The stem colours vary from green, yellow, red and orange so they are a great background where you can plant early spring crocuses, snowdrops or Hellebores that will complement their colours.

Edit: Flipped it round for you Snowdrops.
