What can I do with broad bean tops?
« on: April 20, 2010, 20:00 »
Good evening,

I've had to resow a lot of my broad beans, but planted all of the 'extras' about 4" apart in a separate bed, which at the very least could act as a green manure.

I'm going to end up with a lot of shoots though.

Do they eat well raw (like pea shoots)?
Can I let them grow a little more and cook them like spinach?
Will they resprout and can I 'cut and come again'?

Opinions please,

Regards,

SS

Last year to help prevent blackfly i pulled the fresh growing tips from my broad beans (once they had reached a decent height) These tips were used in a stir fry and tasted great.

Stir fry - didn't think of that one - Is the stalk woody/stringy, and did you need to pull off the leaves?

leave them for the blackfly, sacraficial cropwise :)

lacewings, hoverflies and ladybirds will love the extra territory.
i plant clumps in unused nettle infested corners away from the veg area.and the biodiversity that inhabits is fantastic.
