feeding two week old chicks
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:39 »
hi, i have 7 bantam chicks with a mother silkie and they are on grass and loving it. this has made me think about the other chicks i have that have been incubated, they are in my shed under an electric hen can i feed them small pieces of grass if i chop it up fine or because they are not able to find any grit ie in the soil would that be a problem.
i cant seem to find an answer, thanks in advance for any help/

Mine won't have grass until they are all feathered and ready to go out, i am not to sure, and i am sure someone will let you know, but i would imagine it could cause problems with impacted crops if you give them grass that has been cut, and not what they have pecked themselves.
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

From what ive read they can gorge on grass and it can give them problems :( we keep them on chick crumb until 6 weeks then onto growers when they go out side .
Ive just put some light sussex in a pen that is on slabs then i feed them a little grass each day to get them used to it.When they are old enough to go to the allotment they should be so used to grass hopefully they wont go mad ::)

No I wouldn't do this.  Pecking small bits of fresh growing grass is one thing but giving them it in cut lengths means they may well be getting in too long lengths which can cause crop problems and also cut grass quickly starts to compost and is not good to feed to any chickens.

They'll be perfectly fine on chick crumbs with no risk until they go out.  When moving them on to growers remember to phase them over don't just suddenly change them.
