Ox Tail - any recipes
« on: December 03, 2010, 19:46 »
Hi

From my visit to the local butcher I came home with an Ox Tail, thinking it would make great soup. But can I find a recipe.

Has anyone any ideas please :) :)

Makes a great stew , just treat it as stewing steak.
Or casserole it.

Really tasty food.

Mrs L arrived home with ox tail yesterday... I had mentioned that my parents said they liked it so she bought some to cook for them.

She found a very ancient recipe book with destructions instructions but, in the end, followed the advice on the supermarket packaging.

In an hour or two we will know the results.
Stayed tuned!!

PS How much a kg do other people pay for this delicacy?

I was just saying to my son over our tea of sausage casserole that my mother would rush out and buy oxtails just as the first flake of snow arrived  :tongue2:  It's full of flavour  :)

As Mrs L doesn't drink and I have accumulated a few bottle over the years it's nice to have something to do with the other half-bottle if I open one  ;)

We brought home some ox tail the apprentice butcher had cut up.  He had hacked his way through the bone and not the sinew!  There was splinters of bone everywhere.  We went back and informed the butcher, not a happy man.

Cheers,    Tony.

Tesco are selling it at £5.09 per kg.

The value depends on which end you get , thick end lots of meat, thin end lots of bone :)

Will get some next week if the market trader remembers to put it on the van. :)

We bought some at Tescothingy for the same price. Mrs L seemed to think it quite expensive considering the amount of bone.

Not seem many wild ox around these parts so guess most of them still have their tails

The best oxtail dish I ever came across was in Spain (no suprises there). I was on a conference in Seville, its was a stew, don't think it was Rabo de Toro, but it was fantastic, I love oxtail.
I was thinking of getting some for the Christmas period, popped in the slow cooker.
