aubergine question
« on: September 05, 2007, 12:44 »
hi there, new to this site and have a question
we are growing aubergines in our (unheated) greenhouse..some ordinary ones and some baby ones. we have loads of flowers but only one little lonely fruit is setting..is there anything i can do to encourage more fruit..i've been feeding them once a week and talking nicely to them but the flowers just seem to go brown and fall off
any tips gratefully received

thanks

keep just 4 or 5 fruits on each plant, when you have that many flowers/fruits nip the growning tips off.
feed the soil not the plants
organicish

So far I've managed to pick 2 aubergines off 3 plants, they grew sideways rather than the traditional teardrop shape.  Once they got going though, it was like someone was pumping them up every day.

Not as fruitful as I had hoped (unheated greenhouse - Black Beauty), but there are more flowers forming so will see what happens, at least 50% of flowers have come to nothing.

Am just hoping the daylight hours aren't running out for more fruit.

thanks for all the tips :D
i've just found another little fruit growing hurrah
i'm too worried that the autumnal slant to the weather isnt going to signal the end..tho today its really quite hot out there
i've taken your advice bigbadfrankie and not opened the door today, just got the 2 side vents open..and i'm going to shut it all up earlier in the evening too to try and conserve some of the days heat

Try putting tin foil over the soil to give the developing fruit more light to help them ripen more quickly
