Sink/bath unblocker?
« on: September 07, 2010, 09:50 »
Apart from the commercial products in the shops, does anyone have a recipe for a homemade sink unblocker liquid?

We all have long hair and this combined with soap goo regularly blocks up the sink and bath plug pipes.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks  :D

Buy bags of washing soda which is very cheap and use it regularly to declog as it won't shift major blockages.

Pour a heap over the plughole and then pour a kettle of boiling water over it  :)

sodium bicarb and vinegar
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I use an old net curtain wire with the hook still on the end to get rid of the hair.  It's great for getting round the bend  :)

Solve the problem at source - ask the barber for a 'number one'!

Save your money for shampoo, take the trap off , pull the `wig' out and replace the trap.
Do NOT pour water down t`ole with the trap off. :)

Not the most pleasant job in the world but better than chemical uncloggers.

I did my kitchen sink this morning with caustic soda from Wilko, cheap as chips and it did the job and got rid of the stinking blockage immediately  :)

At the risk of sounding stupid (which my kids say I am) - I assuming to reach this you take the side of the bath off and attack from beneath 8doubl;es?  My dear OH is phobic about most DIY and would probably call a plumber in, but I don't mind having a go!

Yes, put the plug in the bath to stop any water , bath panel off, paint tray or seed tray wiggled under the trap to catch the water,
undo trap from bath and waste pipe then you can put the trap in the tray and pull the tray out without making a mess.
Take care not to lose the rubber seal from the bath connection the other end should stay on the pipe.
Re-fit (careful not to cross thread) as tight as poss by hand or a gentle tweak with waterpump pliers.
Put a 4" of water in the bath and pull the plug and check for drips   giving the joint another tighten  if needed.Bath panel back on. Job done.
Always have a couple of old towels handy when doing plumbing jobs. :)

Absolutely agree! If you run the tap while you're doing it you will be unlucky to even see the offending "articles"!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

B&Q sell a gadget that pumps fresh air at force (so free to use) which works really well.  It is really a stronger version of an old fashioned plunger, but far more effective.  Follow this up with caustic soda and white vinegar
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

You could fit a "dossil" over the shower waste to prevent hairs getting in it in the first place  :)
