Title: AA Are you paying too much?
Post by: Ice on December 31, 2009, 11:41
Last year my monthly payments were £12.  They have just gone up to £17.  That's a huge difference and means yearly cover costs £207, much much more than the cash price.

I called to query and without any fuss got a 30% reduction, slightly less than I paid last year.  The immediate backdown made me think they were just trying it on to see how many wouldn't bother to check.

It's well worth a phone call if yours has gone up recently.  ;)

I agree they are trying it on.
I pay mine annually and the figure they quoted was a lot higher than last year.
I called them and said please match the internet price or I would switch to the RAC
They replied that they were not allowed to match the internet price but they could give me a discount as i was a valued member!
The discounted price was lower than the online price

Never be afraid to ask.  My Sky broke and I didn't have cover.  They quoted £60 to repair it.  I said it was too much and I would rather cancel my subscription.  They fixed it for £20. ;)

Should have added my comments above also work with British Gas boiler cover.
They gave me what was quoted on the internet for new customers when I said my quote was too high :)

Same goes for their insurance.  Yesterday rang to check the renewal figure (been with them 4 years or so).  Got figure.  I said I'd shop around, as it had gone up.  Rang round, got cheaper price, bought it.  Rang back to cancel with AA, got through to cancellations who said they'd knock £70 off their quote.

I was livid.  I asked why they couldn't have told me that this morning when I rang for the renwal.  Meanwhile had gone through all the palaver of getting new policy sorted and had paid for that so cancelled with AA.

Honestly .... :tongue2:

I always shop around every year for my insurance and the AA are never a cheap option.  If you get a cheaper quote elsewhere it's always a good idea to ask if your present insurers are willing to match it.

At the moment I'm insured by the Post Office at £12 a month.  Result. :D

This year I paid £101-25 to the AA for joint personal cover for my wife and myself, giving us roadside assistance and national recovery. I used a cashback site and got £50 cashback leaving us paying less than £26 each for cover. Not too bad.....

Hi Ice
even with your 30% discount thats £140
I added Green flag to my insurance for about £40. Touch wood I never had to put them to the test yet. The total package is £300(full comp)

I use Auto aid - you have to pay up front & claim back, but only ever had them out for punctures and the garages dealt direct, so not a problem. They are very cheap and have turned up quickly each time. I think the premium is about £37 for full cover, roadside, recovery & home start.

Hi BBF.  The discount was actually more than 30% as it amounted to slightly less than I was paying last year.  I was with with Green Flag very briefly many years ago.  I had to call them out and a total neanderthal turned up.  He was peed off that I he had been given the job just as he was going to pick up his new car.  He threw his mobile phone down the road because he couldn't work it and he was so angry.

I hope they have improved a little since then.

so do I, but it sounds like theres room for improvment. Did he get the car going?

No he didn't get it going.  I had asked to be towed to my ususal garage and when he heard where it was he went beserk as it was in the opposite direction to where his new car was.  He was still hoping to get there in time. ::)  I got into the tow truck and endured a white knuckle ride to the garage.  He drove like a lunatic.

A letter was written............

Its worth checking with other ways of getting it too.

I have a Halifax gold account - costs 12/Month

For that i get AA cover, Phone insurance, identity protection, travel insurance

Also if you have an ok Income (£1000/month or more) - they give you £5/month into your account.

So all of that actually costs 7/Month!

Win!

I have my car insurance with Saga, (over 50's) and I get free AA cover with it.

I had the same issue with AA many years ago, then they tried to restrict my call outs when I had a spate of problems with the car. They never attended that often as it was a heat intermittent problem which usually fixed before they arrived, never less than 1.5 hours.

I'm now with AutoAid and 'touch wood' haven't had to call them.

Re. The neanderthal. Even the AA use local breakdown companies when they haven't got cover, so chances are he'd have arrived even if you were with the AA.

Remember the AA is no longer the Association it used to be. It is a profit making company, out to screw every penny they can out of you.

Hi

Must show this to the O/H, he had this a few years back.

His AA cover price shot up & he rang to check it out, they offered a cut in premiums. He didn't bite, told them he was going elsewhere.

Hey Presto ! They could do the old price  :)  He left never to go back, just goes to show they are willing to try in on.

Going to drag this up again.

Had my RAC renewal this morning - nearly £168. A quick spin through their sign up form on t'inerweb came up with £132.

Phone call time - and they renewed it for £108.

Good result for me - but how many just stump up?

Hopefully many more people will question these things now we are all being squeezed for cash.  Always, always shop around when renewal time comes around for everything.

Share your trick for getting through to them on the phone? I use them for my breakdown cover but can never get through on the phone to see how they could compete come car insurance renewal time.

I'm on a roll!!!

Saved another £60+ by switching the motorhome insurance to Saga. They only want £139 full comp!

Had a phone call from Saga, as I'd saved the quote to deal with later.

Offered a further £15 off if I took it out straight away. At £124 fully comp for a motorhome - of course I did!

May be worth even if you find a good deal, holding fire for a short while - you never know!

This thread has just saved us a load of cash. Our AA cover came through today at just over £44 a quarter. Thats £178 in a year. Saw this thread and looked online. The same cover for new members is £94 a year! The RAC is £99 for the same cover so if the AA won't give us a whopping discount we will be switching. I always change insurances now but it hadn't occured to me to check our breakdown cover. Thanks everyone :)

Tell them you are leaving and they will undercut even their online price for newbies to retain your custom.  Well that's what they did for me. :)

ehmmm ... hate to say this but i am a patrol for one of the breakdown lot , to sum up its better to swap cover every year between both . your worth more as a new customer every other year and you can take advantage of the offers that are on offer . please don't take this as a join this club or this one offer . but honestly loyalty means jack all in this day and age .

I have just had my renewal statement for the forthcoming year. It has gone up to £88.29 a quarter from £40.29   A grand total Of £160 a year more >:( >:( It is so annoying as I have only used them once in the last year because of a flat battery on the wife's car.
One phone call later, it's now £52.00. It's annoying. The silly thing is, I get free roadside cover on my car and I only keep the AA cover for all the other cars in the household!!!!!!

The AA renewed my cover automatically and I noticed it had gone up a lot from the year before and I never called them out, so I'm not impressed. They won't be renewing me automatically next year  >:(

I got my car insurance this year with Saga but I didn't get free AA cover

I rang the Post Office (my insurer at the time of renewal) to see if they could match Saga but they said they couldn't
