Bordeaux mix
« on: April 08, 2014, 23:21 »
Just read a post that says we can't use it any more, is that right?  I have a packet in the shed

As far as I know you still can. It's still listed on RHS and other sites. A bit more info here: http://www.gro-welldirect.co.uk/blog/2013/05/vitax-bordeaux-mixture-statement/

Whether you'd want to or not is a whole other kettle of fish.  ;)

That's why it's still in the shed, I inherited it with some other stuff.  I guess I should work out how to get rid of it really.  I just keep leaving it on the shelf whilst I think about it.

Bordeaux Mixture is not going to be withdrawn.

There was a change in the EU regulations and it wasn't clear which products would be available afterwards, because of the cost of re-registering. The good news is that it has been registered and is still available, if you want to use it.

Perhaps  ??? a slightly safer alternative is Bayer's Dithane replacement

This product is and absolute must for successful veg growing down here in France! I would rather use this product than something which is systemic and is therefore eaten. We always wash our fruit and veg before eating so if done properly there is little to worry about.

Down near the Spanish border north of Pau... lovely day today but showers later in the week! Problem here is when it rains it does so with a fury for days the dries. I have lovely soil when the moisture content is within a few percent of ideal any wetter and you cannot work any drier and the ground become very hard. Summer vegs are easy to grow but things that require  less hot and dry conditions  struggle. Over wintering things is also difficult because the ground water logs easily in winter time so things like  broad beans which some can grow with out difficulty are not going to do well. I am working on a drainage system to shed the water better :)

Thought I'd post here rather than starting a new thread.

In May's KG magazine there's an article on blight which talks about Bordeaux mix. It states that Bordeaux Mix had its approval removed in November 2014 and will banned for sale from November 2015. (page 23)

Can anyone find any detail on this? I can't, other than an expired link from KenMuir: 'Please note that Bordeaux Mixture will be withdrawn from sale on 30 November 2014 but any person can use and store existing stocks until 30 November 2015.' The RHS guidance I found dates from March 2014, so prior to any withdrawal.

I don't use Bordeaux mix often, and I won't be stockpiling, but I don't remember seeing any articles on it around the date the approval was withdrawn.

I thought that they were being relicensed,  but it looks as if they are all banned, after all.

The Bayer Dithane replacement looks as if it has gone as well, as it's not on the Bayer site any more

Yes, just found this buried on the RHS website in an article on bacterial canker, but most of the other advice articles, including the fungicide one, haven't been updated.

*NB: The following products are being withdrawn:
Bordeaux Mixture (Vitax) is being withdrawn and cannot be sold after the 30th November 2014 and remaining stocks must be used or disposed of before the 30th November 2015.

Copper oxychloride (Bayer Garden Fruit and Vegetable Disease Control) is being withdrawn and cannot be sold after the 30th November 2014 and remaining stocks must be used or disposed of before the 30th November 2015.

So what are we left with?
