Surplus green matter & compost bins full!
« on: August 27, 2018, 14:22 »
Well, the runner bean and french climbing bean stems have been cut down and cut up and the sweetcorn has been dealt with similarel and popped in the bins.  The beaties in the bins are doing a swell job but slowly.  The tomato stems and sweet potato runners (boy do they run)! are not going to fit in the bins.  I don't want to put the greenery in black plastic bags and have it go all slimey!

Where should I stuff it all?

Cheers,  Tony

All those green stem etc that you've put in the bin will shrink down very quickly. I there's no room when you have your next lot of "greens", just leave them on the ground until there is room.

Think of it as 'chop and drop' compost. Just leave it where it falls, the beasties will incorporate it into the soil where it is - no need to put it inside a bin ;)

I do the same as MoS.  Sometimes some of the bean and pea vines are a bit resistant to rotting, so I just gather them up at the end of the season and chuck them onto the bonfire, then the cold ash is spread around the plot, so nothing is wasted.
