Like a good wine, does horse manure improve with age?


Over the last week I have humped over 10 tons (not tonnes) 1 1/2 tons per trip in my little white van, of very very old horse muck. In fact it must be well over 25 years old and I can say it resembles soil rather than muck.  The heap was immense and the farmer had dug out an 'avenue' straight through the middle.  So, after a few years, does muck go off?

You must have a very accurate sense of weight!, as the difference between tons and tonnes is pretty small.

Whatever the weight, the product is amazing, and I wished I lived closer so that I could come and get some!!

Some of the Nitrogen may wash out of the top layers, but it's still fantastic stuff and you can grow on it straight away

Just for my own interest I weighed a few buckets on the bathroom scales.  Sadly these buckets are coming to the end of their life as the sun has started to break down the plastic and is becoming brittle where exposed to the sun around the tops.  I obtained them from my workplace (Bowyers) where they initally contained Branston Pickle (for pork and pickle pies) and were due to go to landfill.  Sadly...the recycling bug has bit and now they are returned.  The 'muck heap' is about 10 feet high and about 30 yards long.   Cheers,  Tony
