Seed cost?
« on: January 16, 2012, 14:17 »
Just looked at placing my orders, late i know but everything is in stock, and the price came to Just  below £55 including p&p, and i recon i'll need a few other bits too!

What is your average seed cost per season? (not including sets or potatoe's)

That seems like a lot Stompy but I guess it depends on where your buying from and how much land you have, so far I've spent £13 at premier_seeds_direct on ebay and £6 from wilkos when they were 3 for 2 I reckon another fiver and I'll be done that's for a full sized allotment. Where are you buying from?

I've spent just over £15 including the p&p, this year. I have lots of pkts from last year to finish up, and got a lot of seeds in swaps, as well as saving some of my own seed.

£55 does seem a lot of money, but t's not if you are starting from scratch for a full size allotment, I suppose.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I reckon I've spent about £15 on seeds for this year - still got a couple of bits to get.

And another £15 for seed potatoes and sacks (in delivery).

but that should do our plot for the entire year.

moles seeds!

Not somewhere I've ever bought from, just compared Bolthardy beetroot and I paid 99p where as they are £2.05 for a 50g packet from moles. Try shopping around see if you can reduce the overall cost might be worth considering, then again if you have bought from them before and are happy with the quality why not pay a little bit extra.

You can get up to 5,000 seed in 50g of beetroot seed. How many in your 99p packet?

I usually buy from Wilkinsons and local garden centres and DIY stores but found i couldn't get alot of what i was after!

I also found that certain seeds were very expensive for the quantity that you get and was advised to go to moles for them.

Im also not buying everything that i'll grow as i already have a good selection of seed from previous years.

I may have to be more selective and shop around again.

That is very true with places like wilkos you are limited to the more popular types. Like you say perhaps be a bit more selective every penny counts.

Did make me wonder that but just checked the premier seeds shop and there's 600 seeds in a pack. So enough to be going on with for now.

It does make me wonder sometimes about how many seeds they put in a packet....like 500 lettuce seeds. I know they're light and usually cheap, but how many years would you get from 500 seeds?

Suppose you could get through several hundred beetroot seeds a year, your wee might be a funny colour though  :)
