Every year I put in a row of Charlotte seed pots as they are pretty reliable and taste so good. But I'm wondering whether to try something different this year - anyone recommend a 2nd early that tastes as good as Charlotte?

I've always had a row of Charlotte in but last year they were just woeful.  Trying to talk myself into trying something different this year......

Nicola is well spoken of in show circles and similar to Charlotte - I tried different over the years but keep coming back to them. Last year they were in a raised bed with a lot of half-rotted sheep manure and performed brilliantly.

Like John grew Charlotte in 3 no dig raised beds and when it came to earthing up in one I just put compost around the plants in the other after applying slug bait I covered with a weed fabric , the other I just covered with lots of grass clippings. They all did really well but the one with the compost over them did really well. The real bonus all of them were spotlessly clean and a quick wash under the tap was all they needed prior to cooking. I would say though that the bed with the grass clippings has shown some grass growth but nothing that half an hour weeding will not sort out.

I agree with MoS -

I love Lady Cristl, but the seed is becoming nigh on impossible to find.  Good cropper and lovely flavour.

When I saw seed pots, my mind went to "pots in which seedlings were growing".  I've only had 63 years to learn English, give me another 50 and I might get the hang of it!

My American next-door neighbour calls them 'taters'  don't know if that's universal in the States?

Potatoes can also be called spuds or murphys.  There are probably loads of other names too.

That's certainly a common expression out in the country, especially in the South!
