Your seeds wear undies? That's an unfair advantage in keeping their bits warm!
I'm in too.
-
You know they're a bit shy so prefer to keep their undies on.....best tip ever for growing big'uns ;)
-
Me too please. :)
-
I'd like to be included please (anything like last year, I might win the smallest place!!!)
-
Put me down please 8)

Can you add me too, first attempt at growing them this year!
-
:) i'd like a go too ...
-
What defines 'exhibition' growing? How does it differ from regular growing?
-
Growing for a Horticultural Show/Exhibition speaks for itself IMO
This does not include a small local or allotment show.
-
I'll give it a go - hope this year is better for pumpkins mine were very small last year.
-
can you add my name too please - I have never grown a pumpkin before and have just got to make sure the chickens don't get their beaks on them :)
-
Pop me down too please
More space this year so hopefully be bigger than lasts year attempt
Thanks
Rob
-
Can I join in please?
Hopefully pumpkins will be more successful than last year's squash!
-
Me too please.
And i promise not to argue this time MOS
-
Put me down please - got a good spot for them this year (hopefully)
-
Can you put me down please :)

-
me to please never grown one before how much room do they need ? thanks
They need to be able to sprawl a long way - I grow squashes round the edge of other beds.
-
I wasn't going to grow any big ones this year, but count me in!
Do you get just the one entry or can you have one for the biggest, and one for the best looking?
-
thanks yorkie

Just the one entry, the 'prettiest pumpkin' poll is something of a consolation prize for the people who can't manage to grow a big'un ::)

So nothing for those who have small ugly pumpies then?

Now there's a thought!

behave.......................don't make it more complicated for me :tongue2: :D
-
Is this pumpism?
Surely not   :nowink:
-
:nowink: don't go there!
-
Can we join please - never grown one before but we'll give it a go once we figure out where to put it. Any clues from anybody on seed varieties that'll suit the under 12's age group ?
-
If you're going for big, (no point entering unless you're going for "pretty"!), it needs to be something like "Atlantic Giant".
-
If you're going for big, (no point entering unless you're going for "pretty"!), it needs to be something like "Atlantic Giant".
Thanks DD - I just googled images of that and nearly choked at some of the monsters and laughed at the bit of spare space i originally thought they could have  We'll try and get some of those seeds and try and grow something bigger than a ping pong ball :)

You might ned to do as my plot neighbour --- he had to saw his up to take it away a bit at a time
-
The last time I grew an Atlantic Giant, it took up 35 square metres!
(yes I am sad, I measured it)
And it wasn't even that big, I only got 120 Kg.
I got fed up with roast Pumpkin, so I made 35 gallons of wine with it.

Yes please, count me in. Thanks.

Thats ok, count me in! :)
-
im in please
-
Us too please, our seeds are in already!
-
That's a bit early if you're in the UK - perhaps you could pop your location into your profile. On average it's another couple of months before you dare put them outside.
-
Me please, never grown a Pumpkin :)
-
Please put me on your list, this is going to force me to murder the babies I have sown way too early. but hey ho atlanic look much more fun :tongue2:
-
I'm up for giving it a go, so can I join please? this will be my first attempt at pumpkins, I got some seeds today, and planted them in the poly, thanks
-

I can't resist any longer... can I play too please? :D (I'm trying the 'big max' variety  )
i grew big max last year, not a bad pumpkin to say i just planted it and left it, i think it was 49" around the middle
-
OK! I'll give it a try, not usually big in Northern Ireland

-
I think i'll try growing a pumkin too.
-
Forgotten how quickly these things spring up, and more importantly how big they grow.
Have just popped in a couple of seeds of the free 'Hundredweight' seeds I got in the magazine today
-
everything will be swamped soon ::)

thanks - maybe some tlc will yield a contender...
should I be sowing them yet though? (I do have a sunny windowsill at home that they can have which has room for a reasonably large pot until they can go out into unheated greenhouse and then into the allotment)
-
I'm not sowing mine for a couple of weeks yet, they really do grow so very quickly once they've germinated
-
Mine will be going in the end of April
-
not too late then, thank you! - will sit on my hands for a few more weeks ;)
-
can i join in please ive got someof the atlantic giant seeds from the pass the parcel

You don't have to go far afield to get them, Jay:
Atlantic Giant (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Real-Monster-Pumpkin-Dills-Atlantic-Giant-5-Seed-/320454081108#ht_1087wt_1270)
In fact they're the ones I and a lot of others grow.

cheers dd did,nt know you could get seeds offebay --- another lesson learned  how big was last years winner in our climate -- mine wont fit into my small 4 tier amazon greenhouse will will be grown out side in the fresh air and rain of our lovely lancashire weather :D
-
82" circumference.

just got tape measure out ---- wow that is impressive for our climate !!!-- presume it was in a heated greenhouse ? still i am stubborn eneough to still take part and laugh at myself when my punie effort get,s shown, still have to work out uploading pics on this site before that though :D
-
All grown outside.
A pumpkin plant is way too huge for your standard greenhouse.

well that certainly gives me a little encouragment we are fairly sheltered in our rear patio by our building and 6 foot fencing on other 2 sides and get the sun quite well for most of the day, so i should manage to grow something larger than a grape then ?? :D
-
Hello, can we enter?
Well, I guess it's me that enters really, being the member on here, but it'll be my lads that will lay claim to any success!
Good luck everyone and have fun. x x x
-
Just ordered my pumpkin seeds with my sunflower seeds and the postage cost more than the seeds :)
-
I only bought my seed from the garden centre, but I wondered how much the "top" seeds were. If you go to www.pandpseed.com you can buy ONE seed for $25
Although they do some really weird stuff worth looking at.

just got to master the art of adding a photo between now and then ???
-
Me please.
My Atlantic Giant seeds went in last night, two weeks later than planned but I shall lavish them with such love that they'll soon catch up ;)
-
right my hundredweight have just poked there head through - so can you put me down on the list aswell please - i normally struggle to grow squashes - but maybe this year it will be different
-
Only one of pumpkins seems to b coming on ok.
So a lot of tender love and care it will be getting. Unless others spring into life.
-
I'm worried we started ours off too soon as they're going wild already!
There's still time for me to kill them off though, so don't worry ::)
-
Mine have been planted two weeks and still not showing hopefully its the cooler temps not germinating the seeds yet. I have them in my greenhouse at present and that's where I started them last year
-
here are what mine look like (im going to pot them on tomorrow):
-
Me please :D
-
Can you add me too please
I've only just decided to plant pumpkins again this year - they will be outside, not in the polytunnel - so I doubt they will be as big and they have to survive the chicken's attentions.
;)
-
I hope everyone has remembered to boil their seeds for 30 minutes and then plunge them into battery acid to promote healthy growth. :)
I'm determined to win this year 8)

well they might have done that, but I bet they forgot the daily sprays of roundup, and the quick blast with the blowlamp when it is cold....
-

Oh you guys, you're making me nervous...! ::) :D

No need for any of that, send in the greenfly brigade to cut out the growing point.
-
Finally two of mine are poking through. Very pleased as one is a blue variety called blue moon another is the tom king which did well last year
-
Mine are still hiding!
I did dig one up to have a look, and they are sprouting, but they are refusing to get out of bed.
I am obviously trying to grow teenagers!
I might have to give up on going for the biggest and call in Avon and go for the prettiest!
-
just heard on news that york maze are offering a 2k prize for anyone who can beat the UK's heavist pumpkin record
-
Mine have now germinated and are under way. I've turned up the temperature on the heated propagator to try and catch up due to the cold weather we've had.
-
Mine are doing quite well and I'll soon put them in the unheated greenhouse, then hopefully the plot in 10 days to two weeks.
It's all very well bring the plants on with heat, but that can lead to weak plants that won't tolerate the outside conditions very well.
I shouldn't be telling you this, should I?
-
Wahoo!!
Mine broke soil today.
-
I shouldn't be telling you this, should I?
...plant out in...10 days to 2 weeks. (puts note pad away) Eh what?!
::) ;) :D :tongue2:
-
Well mine seemed to of ground to a halt so I might be out of the competition
Got some spare seeds contemplating starting!
Don't think going to have enough posts to enter too
-
Planted mine out today in a big mound of compost & manure.
-
I have a problem with bees well not a problem because they don't bother me...i planted the Atlantic giant the other day and when i dug the hole there was a few bees buzzing round
The thing i wan't to know .... they are making there nest under the pumpkin...will this bother the pumpkin ?
-
mine are growing realy fast and needed to be planted out as they where out-growing their 4 inch pots - so they went in yesterday - only problem is that i havent got much space left a the plot, so they where planted fairy close together :(
-
Mine were planted out today, slightly earlier than normal but they were out growing their pots. Hope the slight drop in temperature over weekend won't affect them but homemade cloches are already prepared... :)
-
Please add me to this challenge. I am trying to grow pumpkins for the first time ever as my children are keen to have their own halloween lanterns!
I have already started a few off and the hundredweights look good so I'm feeling confident 8)

It will probably be ok, but it might be a problem if they expose the roots.
You can help the situation by covering every leaf joint with soil, because the plant will then form extra roots (like a cutting) and make up for losses.
-
Count me in please, hopefully i'll have an entry this year!
-
Planted out some Atlantic Giant today, hope they like the spot! :)
-
well as you lot know i put my pumpkins in last week - had a walk around the plot this mornin only to find that 2 out of the 3 plants have been eaten straight through the main stem >:(- i dont know how the slugs have managed it as they have been surrounded by pellets - its a good job ive got a few more plants on the go as back-ups
-
oh no! how annoying!

oh no! how annoying!
yep :(
-
Put my name down, got them in just hope they do better than last years.
-
Only if you ask nicely! :tongue2:
-
Oh DD. I'm sure waxwing meant to say please - just forgot ::)
-
Sorry pretty please :D
-
seeing as you asked sooo nicely :nowink:
-
-
Well giant pumpkin seeds a big fat fail for me :(
Some ordinary pumpkins gone in plot. Maybe if I talk to them nicely will grow extra large
Oh well always next year only had plot 3 months
-
I might not be in it anymore as the first 2 healthy speciemens (well they were before they went down the plot) were completley decimated by the b.... slugs. Have back ups and will be, against my organic ethics, be using pellets :(
-
Two hundred-weight pumpkins and two mars pumpkins planted out today in lasagne beds.
-
Planted two of my five pumpkins that are in pots today. Will wait a week or so before planting the others
-
Just come back from lottie - one of my plants has snapped in the wind  Still hanging in there but may have to pin all my hopes on the other plant...
-
Had to resow again as a snail wiped both plants out whilst hardening off at the plot, will have to play catch up for this year >:(
-
add me to please , will have a go at this and will be posting
-
me please too - growing them for my son who found the seeds in the garden centre and begged me to grow one for him :D
-
Put my name down too.....not too hopeful but worth a go
-
Hi John, Can you register me please - rugbymad40 for the competition. Having a disasterous year so far on the growing front so this might be a turning point.
Best regards
Rugbymad40 (Ian)
-
I'll put you down for the competition, Ian........as I'm running it ::)
-
The competition is now closed to new entrants
Get your post numbers up - don't forget you have to have 50 by measurement day :)
not that I'm really expecting any huge pumpkins with the weather we've had :(
I'll be lucky if I get any at all >:(
-
Woohoo, one golfball sized pumpkin on both hundredweight pumpkin plants noted today on my new lasagne beds! :D
-
Not Been on here for while need to get me post count up.
Well there was me thinking I was out of running giant pumpkin that was potted showed no signs of life then it has just exploded into life and is now down on plot doing ok. Fingers crossed now
-
I forgot to put some in :D
-
I forgot to put some in :D
Silly boy ;) :D
-
im affraid im gonna have to drop out, all 3 plants got munched to death >:(
-
Got one, a measly foot in diameter.
-
1 Green and 1 Yellow about football size so far, will not weigh a hundredweight though.
-
I'm sure to win the "world's smallest" giant pumpkin this year with mine as it's the size of a cricket ball. ::)
-
oh dear! It's not a good year for'em is it :(
I think my harvest picture will be a bit sad this year
-
I shall be withdrawing on the grounds that imaginary pumpkins are not allowed ;)
Complete failure on the pumpkin front this year, the Halloween ones will have to be brought this year :(
-
i have not entered but our pumpkin
circumfrence 106"
ott side to side 63"
ott blossom to stump 71"

we're out - no pumpkin, not even a golfball ..... Checks packet, hmmm, Atlantic Giant  :nowink:
-
I tried growing Atlantic Giant last year. The biggest I got was the size of a grapefruit. I think it probably needs to be in a polytunnel to really produce something big.
-
I've grown reasonable AG's outside.
But not this year. :(
-
That gives me hope for next year's
heatwave try DD :D. We'd have been ok with even a grapefruit SimonW, since it was a first time effort for fun. The plant eventually took off but the sequence of male/ female flowers was never in sync.
-
It wasn't a winner size wise, but got the "prettiest" last year, (due more to the display around it, I suspect).
I think with a bit more TLC it would have got bigger, but if I remember correctly, the biggest was also grown outside.
Anyway, just to prove you can get something off an AG outside, this was it:

Mine is the size of a satsuma.
Overall I've had a disappointing year in the garden

Mine are much smaller than I would have like but at least there are some
Photos will be duly organised come the weekend

Juan, our neighbour, had lots of butternut squash, about 40, shame they were not mine, I could have entered

Had a quick measure 64"x72"
Need a couple of bods to help weigh them ::)

Here's my squash harvest for 2012 none of them big enough to be worth measuring though :(

Mum that's a lovely show, well done, even more so this year. I found one of mine rotted in the conservatory today :( I think I harvested it too late. Only picked them on Sunday.
-
My largest weighed in at 149lbs  I thought it would be at least 200lbs ::)

My only surviving squash plants from the monsoon this summer was gem squash. The pumpkins and other squash lost the will to live and withered away ::)
Sooooooooo unless we are having a 'small but perfectly formed' class, I'm out
-
there's always this as a last resort - so you never know
There will also be a poll at the end for the prettiest pumpkin
-
No chance of my hundredweight (which isn't!) winning prettiest pumpkin - it is one ugly so and so. Not even a mother could love that one! It will be perfect for All Hallows though as its face looks like Freddie Kruger even without the carving!!)
-
I love the sound of that
-
This year, simply getting anything that turns orange will be a winner for me. Grandson aged 5 planted Pumpkin Mars and we are racing against time, surrounding it with bananas, shining a daylight craft lamp on it 24/7. It is near a window but where's the sun gone???
It is a nice shape for carving but grandson is dead keen for his mummy to have the flesh for cooking. I think we are almost there .....
-
I love the sound of that
So do I  I think we need a picture of this one ;)
Well done Polly on your pumpkin - looks pretty good to me :)
-
Tomorrow is your last chance to submit your pics
Has nobody else managed to grow a large/pretty pumpkin this year? :(
-
My "giant" pumpkin was tiny and about as pretty as a bulldog chewing a wasp. ::)

Well no pretty pumpkins here - here is my entrant for ugliest pumpkin which grew more wrinkly the more water I gave it! It was a relief to see the one at Wisley looking almost as ugly as mine! I just wish I was better at pumpkin carving to do it justice - it looked like Freddie Kreuger's face before carving!! How's this for a complexion??!

It is a hundredweight variety but wasn't huge. It weighed 2.2 Kg and measured about 63cm - so not huge but I was just thankful to have some pumpkins this year at all. The children appreciated it, (and one of the Mars pumpkins I also grew) for their first Halloween.

(Honest, the children are happy!)

The Mars pumpkin measured 56.5cm but I forgot to weigh it before carving it!
-
I didnt register for the competition but here is the Mars which my little grandson sowed. It grew to 80 cm circumference and weighed 3.5 kg - with the help of daylight craft lamp, ripe bananas and windowsill near a radiator we finally achieved full ripeness on Oct 31! This was our most successful this year. Another Mars was much smaller though a good shape. Mammoths didnt do well at all.

So I hereby declare angeladavies the winner of 'the prettiest pumpkin' with this lovely pic :D

Oh bless, and I declare MoS as being a soft touch :D
The children will be well and truly delighted as of course (in their minds and words) their punnikens is the bestest!!!

Oh that's so cute Angela. I love hearing children's mispronunciations. Do I detect a new thread whilst chatting on the plot.
