Please help how do I tell the difference???!!!
« on: April 21, 2010, 21:29 »
Hi everyone
Recently taken on an allotment so newbie alert! I've been busy growing lots at home in a greenhouse but my 2 and 3 year olds thought it was clever to remove my labels so now i'm left with cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli plants which all look pretty simular but now have no idea which is which!!! Any clues would be gratefully accepted!!

I would have thought that the broccolii will grow taller faster, cabbages stay fairly short, I hate cauliflower so I can't tell you what to look for for that as I never grow it.  :D If you get the spacings wrong, brassicas don't mind being transplanted as long as you firm them in well.

Oh dear, very difficult to tell apart.

If you plant them all at 2 ft apart they will all grow well.  The cabbages will be spaced wider than needed but they won't complain.

lol. I know.

Yesterday, in a rather fun conversation with my son in the States, I referred to him as the "ground elder of my life".

He called me back an hour later with his staff laughing in the background saying "Ground elder, really Mother?!"

What do we do. :)

I have the same problem with one start in my greenhouse. Lost its tag...and I'm going Hmmm? Perhaps others will give us some hints.

caulis tend to have a different outer leaf formation, hard to explain in words this lol.
but they will have a more serrated edge to them than the cabbages.
in your situation i'd lay out 1 of each variety and then pick out the 1 with the most serrated edge.
with a bit of luck thats your cauli so plant it pretty much the same as the cabbage.
if you have a good magnifying glass it will make the process much easier to identify who's who.

tall ones are ya broc so 2ft apart eachway, serrated leaf is the cauli.you know the rest lol.
main prob was getting the broc identified :)
