« on: April 14, 2010, 13:24 »

Hi

I am not that familiar with them either, but someone recommended them to me recently so I did look them up.  Not sure if this site helps but it might.  http://www.lee-woolf.co.uk/legbars/index.asp?k=25

I hatched 2 out of 3 burford brown eggs last autumn - both girls :D.  I think they must be bred from hybrid as the 2 hens look fairly different - one is almost black - with a beautiful greeny tinge to her feathers - the other is lighter with laced brown feathers on her neck.  Both really great personalities and lay really beautiful dark brown eggs.
Possibly a similar original mix to a black rock, they may no longer be a true 'F1' hybrid, but are now self breeding - I don't know how long it takes for a new breed to be developed and recognised.
I got mine from 'Legbars of Broadway' who have some more info on the site but don't really make it clear if they are a hybrid or a new strain.

Hi

They look like lovely chooks and the eggs are a great colour!  They are I believe a hybrid strain which will have been  developed from pure breed birds.  For example I think I'm right in saying that the warren - one of the breeds used for commercial egg laying - was originally bred from rhode islands crossed with light sussex.  They do breed true but are still a hybrid.

Hybrid egg layers are more productive than the pure breeds, but live shorter lives (I think they wear out!).

Hope that helps,

Sarah

I got some Burford Browns from legbars of Broadway.  They are friendly and very very amenable birds and lay the most fantastic large dark brown freckled eggs.  One is black with the bluey green sheen and the other nut brown laced.  Both are true types .. The Burford Brown was developed by Phillip Lee Wolfe's gran Mabel Pearman.  He wont say what the mix is but I'd venture french copper maran with something huge like an orp (some have feathered feet).  Either way, enjoy your chickies .. they're lovely girls !  Very cuddly ! :D

Is the flavour noticeably better than other eggs and 'out of this world' as has been described?  Waitrose website has good reviews for the eggs, but this maybe because they are happy free range hens.

well if they are you have 3 sexes then  ;)

some birds will not breed true to type to get the same you have to breed a male of 1 breed with a female of another breed not the resulting chicks with each other.
Staffies are softer than you think.

the taste and colour of the yolk is down to the feed not the breed  :D
