Orange spots are rust, a fungus, and black spots are........black spot fungus

I use Roseclear 3 on the one old fashioned rose that always suffers in my garden as it would lose all its leaves if I didn't. The other more modern roses seem able to cope with the odd leaf being nipped off when the spots appear, without doing any damage to the plant. It is important to clear and remove/burn the affected autumn leaves so that the spores are destroyed before the new growth appears.

It's also a good idea when pruning your roses in winter / spring to cut out any branches that show signs of blackspot on them too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

As a preventative against both rust and blackspot, start spraying with Roseclear3 about mid February and continue doing so about every 10 to 14 days. Goosegirl, I have to admit, I have NEVER seen Blackspot on stems, only leaves. :D

And never compost the leaves if they have fungal diseases on them
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

DavidT - re- blackspot on rose stems, I have read it in one or two books, can't just remember which ones but could be RHS pruning guide.

Will try to remember tomorrow to look it up for you. If you can't get hold of the book(s) I can type the info on here.

DavidT - it's in the RHS book of Pests and Diseases on page 172. The spots on the stems are smaller than on the leaves and are purple-black and occur particularly on species roses. Prune out in spring and spray with a suitable fungicide afterwards. Cheers!
