Beans Beans Beans
« on: July 19, 2011, 07:02 »
For the first time this year I am growing dwarf aand climbing french beans and runners.  Normally I just do dwarf french and runners.  I have been eating the french beans for probably three weeks or so now (maybe a bit longer).  The runners (growing in the same bed) are not cropping yet, probably another week or two.  This is great it spreads the bean harvest out a decent amount but is it normal?  Can I expect climbing french early, or is it a weather thing?  I can't remember the variety of climbers but are there some that are even earlier?

Beans from mid/late June to November (frosts permitting)- not bad

My purple climbing French beans always start to crop before the runners.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've had a couple of handfuls of runners, with plants only halfway up the poles and today I gathered a good handful of french beans from a small patch that I put in as a filler. I've two more rows of french beans coming, but they'll be a while. Nothing on the Borlotti yet, The black/white never germinated and I have a row of chickpeas doing well.

No beans yet here in Yorkshire, but a slow start due to cold and wind in May.  However, following seaweed feed, now growing apace.  Many flowers on both the runners (Czar) and climbing French (Cherokee Trail of Tears).   Lots of foliage now to top of poles. First runners have started to set.   So expecting big harvest but delayed.

Several crops of dwarfs and, later than the first dwarfs, I have had a few crops off the runners which are now off their poles (Southern UK, first runners early July)

I've just started picking my climbing French bean Cobra, but the climbing French bean Blauhilde right next to them have only just started into flower, as have my runner beans. I've got a few beans on the borlotti, but only one big enough to show any colour yet (I might frame it).
