Too late for leeks from seed now?
« on: May 09, 2011, 09:29 »
I really wanted to get some leeks in this year for autumn but I fear I've left it too late. Going round a couple of garden centres yesterday they were selling off most of the ready-grown seedlings 1/2 price, and no leeks were left :(

Can I still grow some from seed myself? Or is it too late? I'd plan on growing them in pots then transplanting.

I shall check the back of the packets I've got. .....

It says March/April but there may be later varieties. Someone on here will know  :)

I was late sowing last year due to illness - around about this time in fact.

They did make something, but got leek moth in between times, (a bad year!). I ended up with something a little larger than what you'd call baby leeks, but had the moth not intervened I think they would have been a more reasonable size.

Bottom line - nowt to lose.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm sowing my third batch this week in pods in the greenhouse. They will go into the spud beds when the earlies are out, for overwintering. I did this last year and it worked quite well - I dug up the last of last year's crop a couple of weeks ago.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I have sown a second lot 2 days ago in modules and last year we were late with everything as we didn't change the garden until the end of may and we had some great veg including leeks.
You have nothing but a few seeds to lose if they don't work so go on plant them today.

I am about to sow more leeks as having sown a load in early April they havent bothered to get out of bed!- I have used my normal trick of going and giving them a pep-talk but no luck yet, mutter.
So I am having to use the other trick to guarantee a sudden improvement in germination and plant a load more!

My theory is 'better late than never!'
Plus baby leeks taste nice!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

The plastic devider inserts that go into seed trays. They can devide a seedtray into various sizes, like these

Mumofstig,

When you grow leeks in modules do you plant the whole module out? Or do you lift the baby leek from the compost and pop in a hole at the plot? A little confused as never grown these before? ??? ???

I'm sorry I don't know I start mine in litter trays like DD,
http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=26363.msg312300#msg312300

separate them out and dib them in after my early potatoes are lifted

(It was Ma Lowe who sowed them in modules)

Sorry I hadn't realised you had asked a question.

It depends when I am ready to plant out. The first lot were potted on to bigger pots before being planted out in the garden but the ones I have just donemay well be put straight into the garden. I lift the whole plant and compost out of each module and plant the whole thing into the soil.

Hope that helps.

I don't think you will be able to plant them deep enough to get a decent length of blanched stem.

Newspaper pots too much faff for me for small-individual-return crops like Carrots (and that would include Leeks)
