greenhouse update-FINISHED- with pics
« on: November 07, 2008, 20:26 »
as a lot of you know I got a 9x17 greenhouse for £30 with a few missing parts and broken glass. So I've managed to get hold of 2 glazing bars today for £10 for both, so far its cost me £40. I need three window handles as they are missing, rusted, snapped off e.t.c. So any advice as to where I can get theese handles would be great ? Also is it costly and hard to build potting benches/staging for someone who is useless at diy ? And one other thing should I bolt it down or will the weight of the glass be enough as its been here for about 2 weeks now with no glass just the frame and it hasn't blown away but on the other hand I don't want to be up at 4am on a frosty windy december night chasing my greenhouse around the garden. So if I should bolt it down, how ? its going on concrete by the way, just here as the picture shows. Any help would be useful even though its really small, I'm a complete greenhouse novice.

8)  Garddwr nice greenhouse.

Yes bolt it down !! you can get expanding bolts to anchor it to the ground, I think they are actually called anchor bolts, drill them through the bottom of the frame and into the concrete.

I made a quick bench this year out of 2 scaffolding planks and 2 smallish pallets. stood the pallets on their ends and placed the planks over the top bang in a few nails and it was ok, wobbled a bit but sound enough for the spring  :D

thanks Rich  :D

I'll bolt it down then !

I'll like to have everything neat and tidy, the greenhouse being no exception so I'll have to have a solid one that will last many seasons. I searched the site for building them and found that John built a really nice one LINK that I would love to try making but looks too.

Yes nice staging,  pretty easy to make to be honest.

Just decide on the length and width and you have most of you cutting dimensions. use an off cut of the appropriate width to make a spacer and bobs yer uncle.

Cool green house! my ones half that size. What are you going to grow in it? With a green house that size i would grow lots and lots of tomatoes. Mines on grass so ive dug a border inside. I wouldnt bother buying a bench (they cost to much!) Me and my dad made our own out of some cheap timber from b and qs and it turned out prittey good. Ive got a grape vine in mine.

well greenfinger I will be starting off all my veg and flower seeeds in there and then I will be growing tomatoes, cucumbers.chilli, peppers and aubergines and strawberrys. I think I'll make my own benches as well. Would it be wise to make sure they fit through the door ?because one seed sowing time is over I need room for the actual plants.

So yesterday we finaly managed to get it finished,I got a shock with the glazier bill £55 but ah well Ive got a 9x17 greenhouse for less than a £100 and just a bit of hassle with geting it here. So I'm very pleased. And here it is this morning after surviving its first night here in the wild west(promising very bad winds over the weekend!! )

Just a thought but...

I'm putting myown greenhouse together and have a louvred vent, does it really need to be at the base or could i put it in after the first pane.?

Or does that defeat the object of it.?

Just thinking about mice coming in.

very nice.

might I ask where you got the glass from, and how much glass you got for that amount of money?

I'm in a similar position with a (much smaller) frame and only half the glass i need, but the quote I got for (horticultural) glass was about £50 to replace about half of the glass for a 6x4 frame. :(

My staging is like this:

Needs a bit of tidying this winter but you can work wonders with some scrap wood and some decking screws.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
