Seed planting
« on: March 16, 2013, 16:17 »
Has anybody started anything yet? I bought a greenhouse last year but even the soil in there is too cold for germination. Do you think everthing will catch up? I was going to try beetroot in a heated propagator but worried they will get too leggie.

Any thoughts gratefully received ;0)

I've started some onion from seed but moved them to a sunny windowsill, and will be sowing some brassicas (sprouts, cabbage, calabrese, brocolli) and some lettuce this weekend but these will only be indoors to speed up germination then moved to cold frames or unheated greenhouse.  They should be fine in this cold weather and then gradually hardened off to plant out later.  Chillies and peppers are nearly all germinated indoors but won't be going to the greenhouse until the weather warms up and I think this may be about mid-late April.  I'll be sowing tomatoes indoors any day now for greenhouse growing later so it's all happening  :D

I wouldn't put beetroot in a heated propagator, a windowsill is fine. I move mine off the sill at night, even with double glazing there can be a big temperature drop.

Not allowed to plant indoors so I guess I'll just have to be patient until the greenhouse warms up!

You're too early with the runners.

You won't be able to plant them out for another 2 months.

I'll be be sowing mine in another month.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Broad beans OK & the mangetout should be OK in the frame unless it gets really cold. They don't want it too warm.

My OH has been away for the weekend and will come back tomorrow to a seed tray (attempting to germinate perennial flower seeds) on the bathroom window sill!

I can just imagine the reaction tomorrow

I wonder how long it will be before I'll have to move it...
