What are your spuds actually doing at the moment?

If they seem to be doing little or nothing that's OK because it is presumably quite cold in your garage. If they are showing signs of developing white chits (they should be a mixture of dark green and purple) they need to be put somewhere with more light.

I believe it has more to do with the temperature DD... if they're in full sunlight in a well insulated room, then the heat doesn't do them any good.

I doubt it's that warm in your greenhouse at the moment... more likely to be risk of too cold?
But if they look ok, I guess it mustnt be, so far.

I've chitted spuds in the greenhouse for years with no problems. With about 300 to do it's the only place for them!

I'd be so terrified of a frosty spell damaging them so I'll stick to over the cupboards. That way the OH doesnt have to look at them all over the place too!

Got all mine chitting in a seed tray at the top of the cupboard, should be ready by the end of march

I have just completed a clandestine mission to move the spuds from the cold not too light garage to the top of the cupboards.  May be a little too warm there (about 18C) but I will see what they are like when I get back form a business trip on friday.

My chirs are quite small and mostly white but with purple as well.

Mine are chitting nicely in my north-facing conservatory.  It's pretty cold, but full of light.  All doing well.  How big do they have to be (the chits!) before planting?  sorry I'm such a novice at this stuff, but you lot probably have all the answers!

Different varieties have different length chits, I'd aim for about 1" or so

Mine are on a south west facing windowsill in the unheated and unused porch. We have had a max min thermometer in there for years and it has never gone below about 2 degrees even in the worst weather. Spuds seem to like it and chit just fine even though they get whatever sun there is from about noon on (make that none right now then!!)
