main crop potatoes
« on: September 19, 2013, 17:11 »
Been digging up last of my main crop potatoes between rain. Mostly ok and quite a lot have scab but will use them first. One plant was disgusting! Most of the potatoes were mushy and frothy.  :(
Am burning all foliage of potatoes from main crop and will be rotating to another area next year but wondered what this was? New to plot last year and didn't really grow much so no potatoes there last year

What was the foliage like on the plant with the mushy tubers?

Could have been blight, but to have affected the tubers too it would have been visible on the leaves first for some time, but whatever it was you can count yourself lucky it didn't affect the others and you've got a worthwhile crop. :)

Scab is usually induced by too much lime on the soil, although some varieties are more susceptible than others.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I pulled my first root of Desiree yesterday. Nice big spuds and plenty of them. Quite a few with scab though.
