Early spuds not flowered?
« on: June 28, 2010, 16:19 »
Hi

I planted 2 lots of earlys spuds 1 week before good friday this year.

One lot in green house in bags (arla) and a different type out side.

The ones outside got nipped with the frost but I had earthed up well, so they appeared to come back Ok.

Odd thing is I have not see any flowers on either?

My main crops (marris pirer and king edwards ) are just starting to flower, and my second earlys have been in flow a good few weeks now.

I think I will try lifting a plant and see.

I was going to point you in that direction.

I assume you mean "Orla" not "Arla".

The database is not very helpful in this instance, the British Potato Council one states it has few berries, so probably few flowers!

http://varieties.potato.org.uk/display_description.php?variety_name=Orla
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I looked at that, But Orla is not an early potato...........it's an early maincrop, so it wouldn't be ready any time soon anyway, would it?

Missed that bit!

Perhaps we're looking at the wrong spud.

I read somewhere that Orla is an early maincrop that can also be grown as a first early. I bought a pack of Orla seed spuds this year that were labelled as first earlies.

oooer...........very strange

Our old friends JBA Seed Potatoes say
Quote
Orla are a very popular potato for the organic grower due to their high blight resistance. They can be grown as a first early or left to mature as an early maincrop.

so.....confusion all round
