Hi Massa, in my small brooder boxes I have for the first couple of days some of that not slip matting stuff that I got from the Pound shop, then after that, I put some shavings down first, and cover them up with an old clean teatowel or pillowcase.  In my brooder shed, I put shavings covered up with old clean sheets or duvet covers that I buy for pennies from the local auction.

It helps to stop the chicks slipping and getting spraddle leg. and also stops them trying to eat the shavings. once they are about 4 days old, I take the covering off and below it they have nice fresh clean shavings!
