Some Help with greenhouses please
« on: February 01, 2019, 13:30 »
Hi All,

I am new to the forum and don't really know anything about gardening. This is where I need your help.

My family recently lost my grandad sadly who loved gardening and had an absolutely beautiful garden that he was so proud of.

Now he had shown me bits over the years to keep things looking nice which I want to keep doing so we can all use his garden to remember him.

The problem I have is his greenhouse, as his illness got worse towards the end he couldn't look after the cedar greenhouse and "prepare it for winter" like he used to.

With the snow being here I was just trying to find out what I should and could be doing to make sure the greenhouse makes it through the rough weather without damage.  I have read some things on the internet but figured actually asking gardeners will be better.

Thanks in advance for your help.

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your Grandad's passing. Many of us on the Forum learned so much about growing from our grandparents, and you may find you have taken in more than you think. And what a lovely greenhouse!

The first place to start is to please let us know if there are any plants in there, and if you know what they are, so much the better. Then we shall be able to make some suggestions which will hopefully be helpful

Also like to say sorry for your loss.
As for the greenhouse the main thing I would say is to brush off any snow that settles on it, it's suprisingly heavy and can damage even the strongest greenhouse.

Yes... spent an hour clearing it off the polytunnels today, and off the greenhouse in the garden. Weighs a lot!!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

Something else that is suggested to do at this time of year with greenhouses is to wash down the panes of glass inside and out, and ditto the framework, to maximise the amount of light that gets in to the plants and to kill any bugs.

Also, make sure that there aren't any loose panes and that the door shuts properly.  If it gets stormy, wind can get into the greenhouse and cause damage from inside.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
