barter for coffee grinds.
« on: November 26, 2010, 18:19 »
After reading up on the merits of used coffee grinds for soil improvement I approached my local garden centre café and asked if they’d be prepared to save up then give me their grids for six free range eggs each week from my small flock of chooks. No problem was the answer and every one’s happy. :D

Starbucks give them away free  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yup, I pick up a bag every week. You dont even need to buy a coffee.

I usually just put them in a bag of general purpose compost and see what happens, usuallt the go green, but a bit of a shake up breaks them down

I have no idea if they improve the soil or not, when the bag is full, I just dig it into the chicken run, then sow poultry grass for them to have a go and and give my garden a break

Still it beats just binning them (any food we have never gets to a compost heap, the hens eat it all :))
It's all about the journey, not the destination

Oh my goodness I can't believe it's only just ocurred to me!  I have a friend who recently lost his job (a really lovely guy in his late 50s, highly skilled but nobody will employ him... but that's ANOTHER story...)

Anyway he's setting up a mobile coffee cart business and it had never occurred to me until this moment that I should ask him for all his used coffee grounds!

I have four systems going to dispose of organic waste at home:
1) Chickens (they arrive next month) [for most food scraps]
2) Worm farm [for food scraps that are not chicken-suitable]
3) Bokashi bin [for meat scraps]
4) Hot compost [for chicken litter/manure & bulky or poisonous garden plants]

The coffee grounds will make a great addition to the hot compost.  Thanks for the prompt!
