Yew tree on my allotment
« on: June 19, 2013, 22:00 »
Help!

I've taken over an allotment for the first time this year and there is a Yew tree approx 10-15 ft high right next to a crown of Rhubarb and the compost heap. I've been told I can cut it down by the secretary of the association but how do I go about it? Any advice?

yew is toxic so can the association get rid of this. if not mask and glove an cut down and remove to recycling centre, do not burn any part.

I'm not sure you need to take any very special precautions.

A mask is a good idea and don't eat any ;)

Many thanks both - I knew I'd get an answer. This is going to be a job for the autumn but this much appreciated all the same  :)

if not removing roots, bang some copper nails into it.

Or drill some holes in the stump and fill with root-out.

They use yew prunings to make a cancer drug, you can have prunings collected if you have enough, not sure who you contact though. Just gurgled it & found this

What a shame... Yew is very slow growing and can live for thousands of years......
Seems heartless and shortsighted to cut it down for a fleeting convenience....Learn to  live with it.
