Planting in Rows: Alternatives
« on: February 25, 2019, 22:25 »
I see a lot of neat rows of leeks, neat rows of garlic, etc.  I'm wondering if there are alternatives to rows.   Small squares like mini-fields?  How about a spiral-galaxy of onions?  What plant would you use for the black hole at the centre of the galaxy?

Any ideas for alternatives to rows?

As I grow in raised beds I work in squares. Say a crop should be 5" apart in 10" rows, I just plant in squares with a 7.5" gap each way.

The sprog likes to write his name with radishes though...

Equidistant planting used a lot here, as well - but I do salad mixes in patches wherever there's space  ;)

That's what suits here too. I use the criteria that I have to be able to weed between/around plants without damaging them so random broadcast doesn't work so well for anything staying in the ground any length of time

and Cress seeds make a good one to write names with I've found, or, with patience, the occasional birthday message for a Midget Gem  :D

I visited Peppa Pig world at Paultons Park, Hampshire last year and there they have an allotment you ride round on a little tractor, planted up in a range of unusual and visually pleasing ways. It was absolutely stunning. Twisting paths, banks and ditches, curved rows and blocks, domes made from sticks and a few standard greenhouses and sheds dotted around...

We aim for straight lines and rows to get the most from the space but I have to admit after seeing that I felt inspired to create something as beautiful as that, maybe one day!

That park is worth visiting just to see the planting in all areas, clearly someone there knows what theyre doing.
