How to protect apple tree from caterpillars
« on: February 24, 2019, 11:33 »
Last year I planted a two year old ellisons orange which made 7 fruit, but all of them got infested and none were edible. What works? Pheromone traps? Vaseline on the trunk?

Spraying insecticide at the right time works, but it's not for everyone.

You really need to know what type of problem you're dealing with codling moth or winter moth. Grease bands are only effective against winter moth, but putting one on wont hurt. Pheromone traps are specific and will only reduce not remove the problem.  You may get lucky and the tree out produce the moth which will at least give you some crop.

Thanks lardman, I want to avoid insecticides. They are grey black, about 1-2 cm long. Having googled winter moth and codling moth they don’t look like either of those. They are somewhat “ furry”.

Having googled around they look most like tent caterpillars.

This seems reasonable advice if you don't want to spray

Can't say I've had that particular problem.

If it's pesticides you're not keen on spraying, having a quick look at the life cycle a winter wash on your trees may help. There's one by vitax which is essentially just fish oil, it should help.

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll do belt and braces, physical removal , pheromone trap and the vital fish oil.
