Advice please
« on: April 05, 2010, 10:33 »
Hi

Well I'm the proud owner of a brand new allotment, and started digging a patch yesterday.  The soil is great but it has a lot of rubble in it (bits of plastic, glass, bottles etc.) and rocks.

I know it's advisable to remove all weed roots so I'm currently painstakingly removing the these, most of these are small - probably weeds - however there are some thick roots below the surface (about a spade depth down) and some roots are about 2cm in width.

I'm not sure what was there before, but my question is am I best to dig and remove all these, which is obviously going to take some time, or would I be OK removing the smaller weed roots and placing raised beds over the top of the soil, leaving the thicker roots in?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

There isnt a living tree or shrub right net to you is there, it might be the roots from that, if it is then I wouldnt cut them as it might kill whatever plant it is. Anyway, I prefer raised beds anyway, I think that they look tidier and it would avoid the issue of the roots in your case. However they are more expensive   ::)

Hi thanks for the advice.

No there are no living trees nearby, they are all new plots and I think the council have just cleared them and scraped the top of them.  There is a big pile of wood on my plot which is going to be lit soon and one of the neighbours mentioned there were Hawthorn bushes so maybe it's from them.

Good luck with yours.

I was really lucky with mine.  I put my name on the waiting list and 3 weeks later got an email saying the site was being extended.

I went down and got chatting to a few others and one had had their name down for nearly 2 years.  I basically signed up there and then as if I didn't it could be years before I got the opportunity again.

I was digging for 2 1/2 hours yesterday and loved it... the time flew by!
