Title: New Coop
Post by: tiptopchickendon on August 12, 2010, 21:14
Well after my girls had been threatened with the pot because they had eaten all the seedlings my missus had left out on monday, I decided to get them an enclosed run/coop and stop them free ranging around the whole garden, eating everything and leaving their business cards everywhere...

Checked out Fleabay and found what i think is a bargin at 155 notes, nearly 9ft long and nearly 4ft wide

The girls have been in it all afternoon with little or no complaints, but it has been raining herre so where probably glad to be out of it. Hopefully they will still be happy tomorrow...I know the missus is...

some pics of it and the birds

Well I've got a new coop, but what to do with old one...get a couple of bantams. so off to the farm up the road and came back with these 2 ladies
But unfortunately i am unsure of the breeds. The black one (Pearl) i think is a Pekin and no idea of the golden one and the photo does not show her neck feathers very well. Pearl is a real flyer...seconds after taking the pic she was off and flew about 25 ft into the plum tree  lucky when i put my hand out get her down she just stepped onto it and i got down.

so ideas on the breed would be welcome

I don't know what breed they are, but they look very sweet :)

Pearl isn't a pekin however, she is completely the wrong shape, and even as a chick, a pekin can be seen as two spheres mooshed together ;)

Thats what i thought, i would have expect her to be more rounded...
Picture does do her justice,  she stands very elegantley normally.
it was her feathered legs that pushed me towards being a pekin...

What type of bird is the white one in the 1st and 2nd pic of the run?

The very White one that is by the ramp in the 2nd pic is a leghorn, and lays a large white egg...in fact 1 everyday since March 12th...

The other almost white one is a Bitza...bits of this and that, and was bought from the same farm as my 2 new girls.

Well Pearl the black bantam (who i was told was a pekin) now seems to be mostly Dutch Bantam, excepting she has Yellow Feathered Legs has laid her first egg today  :)

As you can see from the photo, when we got her she was very young so an egg at this stage was most unexpected.  Tiny egg though compared to the big girls ones   ;)
