Disaster of the week award goes to>>>>>>>

>>>>>  chookiechook :(

Thought I would make the hens a treat with a nice dish of porridge.... poultry spice.... .chopped apple and banana and to top it all off a generous dash of live meal worms

Yum yum yum

Idea hit the first hurdle when I opened the front door and managed to drop the whole lot over my hall way carpet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grrrrooooooooosssss

Mealies wriggling everywhere.... grey porridge splashed up and stuck to most available surfaces and welded to the carpet.

Grrrrrr

Pellets from now on me thinks :(
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

actually I have a pair of miniature schnauzers that would have been more than happy to clear up..... but I managed to fend them off with a large stick :)

I should have just let the hens in I suppose :)

Excuse me for being thick, but just what are mealworms? Are they like maggots or like garden worms?Where do you get them from?

Meal worms are the lavae stage of a little beetle.... small and skinnyish (not as fat as a maggot) and fast :)

slowed down with a coating of porridge though ;)

Hens love them.... dried or live they make a good treat :)

They'd clean up the porridge and meal worms sure enough but maybe leave you some nice little calling cards  ;)

Don't know if anywhere near you sells wild bird food Mary, but dried mealworms are sold over here in the bird care sections of garden centres and some supermarkets.  You can buy them mail order from the RSPB or Wriggly Wrigglers to name a couple of suppliers.

Yes my spectacular one was to drop a new large glass bottle of Ribena all over a floor.

A hot tip I learnt from a school caretaker many years ago was to pick up most spills like water, vomit a dropped egg up etc. by using a nylon dustpan and brush, much, much faster than a cloth.

I found a great online shop that sells huge dried mealworms - more than an inch long, and they are really cheap. It's called shireshop.co.uk. I paid £13 for a kilo of dried mealworm and that's the cheapest I've come across.
I usually soak them for 10 minutes in warm water before giving them to the chooks and they love them.
