i bought a mint plant form a garden centre in spring, it started of with lovely big leaves i pooted it up in garden compost kept it moist and as time went on the leaves became smaller and narrow, it has flowered but looks nothing like the plant i bought i was wondering if i cut it back would it re-grow better and does it need winter protection? i don't know what its called just "garden mint"

If you have cut it often, then it may have lost strength.  Avoid further cutting until the foliage dies back for winter.  You can then remove dead stalks at ground level.  It will come back (with a vengeance) next year.

It does that as it grows old. Mint is best early season.

It's very hardy, needs no winter protection and can be cut back when the foilage has died.

It's a good idea to plant it in an old bowl or bucket, sunk into the garden  to stop the roots spreading, otherwise it can take over!

If you have a lot of nice fresh mint, early season. Whack it in a blender with sugar & vinegar and make it into a concentrated sauce.

Pour into ice cube tray, knock out when frozen and put into a sealed container.

When you want some let the cubes defrost, add & bit more vinegar. It tastes just like fresh in the depths of winter.

if you have a greenhouse or cold frame .you can put a plant in a 6inch pot in there n have it till late winter just take the tips for use 3 leaves down
