Autumn planting shallots
« on: September 11, 2007, 21:36 »
Wondered if any of my fellow geordie forumers can help?

I have a small bed that I am intending to plant with some garlic and some shallots.  I seem to be having trouble getting the shallot sets (or at least a smaller pack) and am wondering whether I should just wait until the spring ones are out.  Living in the North East, is it harder anyway to do autumn shallots?

I dont want to "waste" the one small bed that I have (everything else is in containers) so advice from those from this part of the woods would be really appreciated  :)

Thats a good idea!  Never thought of the market there.  Worth a try!

It seems harder to buy smaller quantities so every bit helps.

Garlic and shallots can also be grown in containers incidentally.  Deepish ones for garlic.

I am a big fan of porcelain garlic - see http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=6882

Thanks a lot flatcap.  Your info is much appreciated and has saved me a visit there tomorrow!

Useful to know the stall is there though for future reference, so thanks for that  :)

Think I will pay a visit to wilkinsons in cram to see if they have some as I have heard they have some jap onions.  Think I will have to resort to those as a last option!!
