Looking through the plot yesterday with my little boy, we were amazed to discover the squesh plants are still growing and have sqeshes on them! There about the size of a tennis ball,

how big should they be before we pick them and eat them?

The butternut squash I've grown in the past generally get to 8" or so in length, but I suppose it depends on the variety. They should get bigger than a tennis ball!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Bet your one squash is really cute, though.

I know I should be giving mine a nice bed of straw to grow onto, but I'm sure that bag of straw contains the biggest spider in the world. Size of a dinner plate.  Shudder.

Never tried it, but have bought a packet for next year cos the fruit shapes are so huggable.

What do they taste like?

(OK maybe I should have bought one from the supermarket before buying a packet, but shop bought stuff is so duff compared to own grown).

Don't give up yet. Mine are just about setting. They've done this in the past years - leave it until the last minute.

Have 12 butternut plants which are huge and healthy looking, and had 1, yes 1 squash developing. While I was away last week it withered and fell off. How depressing. Loads of male flowers though.
Oops a daisy!

ive never tasted one before. I have had marrow and dont like that. To be honest, im not a great veg lover when it comes to eating it, i just love growing it! most of mine gets given away. Half the old grannies in Wakefield are eating pies made with my apples this year! :D

veg i like - spuds, peas, beans, carrots, beetroot, cauli, lettuce, cabbage, chillis, GALRLIC!!!!!!! and onions. The missus likes sweetcorn, but i dont seem to have any success with it

if its any consolation, my pumpkin plants practically invaded the bottom of the garden, flowed and had half a dozen little pumpkins none of which have got any bigger than a pingpong ball :(
