when to harvest Lady Cristl
« on: June 12, 2019, 12:43 »
It has been such bad weather that I am unsure when I should start harvesting my Lady Christl. There are no flowers but that is not unusual and the foliage shows no signs of yellowing. Apart from having a guddle what do others use as a sign that they are ready?

3 things:

1) Time in the ground - should be 10-12 weeks, but obviously depends on growing conditions.

2) Foliage starts to look a bit bombed out, and begins to start yellowing.

3) When in doubt, you can't beat a careful furtle, the obvious advantage being you can leave the plant in situ to grow a little more if the tubers aren't big enough.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I have started harvesting mine. Some were in pots and I expected them to be ready earlier but I have lifted two plants from the ground and they were ready. Have a furtle around and see.

Not really a keeping variety, but if you have somewhere safe from the rodents you could bury them back in the compost you grew them in and store them somewhere cool.

Failing that, let the skins dry and store them in the fridge, but keep an eye on them, especially if you haven't been able to dry them properly (don't wash them before attempting to dry them.)

Have a fumble underground and see if there are any tubers and how big. If there are suitably sized tubers, I suggest harvesting them sooner rather than later. I was on my allotment earlier today after a two week hoilday and there were slugs everywhere after the wet weather, and we are still stuck under a stagnant low so expect more rain (and slugs).
