Wyandottes
« on: June 15, 2011, 08:22 »
We've had two Wyandottes for almost a year now and they never squat and they won't let us catch them ...is this typical of this breed?

We bought them together and they are almost joined at the hip ...they go off to lay their eggs together but at the moment they are both off laying...both stopped at the same time so will be interesting to see if they start at the same time...oh and they were the biggest wimps when we first introduced them to the rest of the clan..ran a mile if the others so much as looked at themn ...tokk them 3 months to really settle in !

Having said all that they are quite sweet.
Dogs were born with three legs and a spare.

Thanks for your post ANHBUC - can feel a little lonely on here when no one replies..start to get an inferiority (sp?!) complex  after a while !

Sure there must be other Wyndotte owners on here ..would like to know how others behave.

Have noticed that it is quite quiet on the forum at the moment so don't take it personally!

Sure someone will give you some advice soon, x fingers.

I have Wyandotte Bantams and my adults were rescues, so they are taking a little time in gettin used to me, but the chicks are great, very friendly little things.  I was told the breed was fantastic for being friendly and easy to catch, get near....

I have 2 bantam wynadottes - 1 silver laced the other barred.  We had them from 3 weeks old, but wouldn't say they were particularly friendly.  They certainly don't like getting picked up.  They are about a year old now.

But they are great pals, and went broody together earlier in the spring, and are often to be seen together with a golden partridge plymouth rock we bought at the same time.

I will take a wild guess and assume everyone is out in their gardens chatting to their chickens.  Exactly what they should be doing on a summer weekend.

As it is winter here, and cold and wet, I have no such excuse.  But I also don't have Wyandottes so I'm no help.

ali2, how old were the Wyandottes when you got them?  They may have already been established in their habits, and if their previous owner wasn't all touchy-feely with them it might just be the way they were socialised.

Hi Lindeggs - we've had them from about 18 weeks  from a breeder- they must be nearly a year old now ...the only time we could catch one easily when one was broody and lifted her off the nest.

They are quite comical to watch and were bottom of the pecking order but we have since had 2 new chickens and they are now showing their rights as no longer the 'newbies' and have a sly  peck at the new ones - quite funny as have said in my first meassage they were the biggest wimps out !!

Oh New Zealand ....a place where hubby would love to go !

We have had our summer early this year, the last couple of weeks has been cold and wet.  It is better today but the next downpour is forecast for later and the rest of the week is looking similar.   :(  The garden needs it and our pond is about 3 inches (12 cms) below its normal level but it is that drizzly soaking rain that won't top up the pond!  Makes poo picking an unpleasant job as well.  Luckily we can see the hens antics from indoors.   :)
