duck question
« on: October 27, 2008, 12:17 »
My babies are now 11 days old and the weather over the next couple of days here is supposed to be glorious. The question is as they are getting quite active now and love to run can I have them out in the garden with me for 5 to 10 minutes so they can have a good play.

Thanks Sarah was hoping you might be about.

If it is nice tomorrow I'll put them on the grass and see what happens. Do you think I can put out some water for them to have a little dunk. I have a potting tray that is about 2 inches deep.

I will be on hand at all times with Life raft and camera

If they're in the full sunshine & out of the wind go for it :D

You will all have a great time, it is lovely seeing them out exploring for the first time  :D

It's nice here today, but the wind is bitter  :(

In work today unfortunately as it is a lovely day, My garden is very sheltered and think if im okay to go out in a t-shirt. They will be fine for 5 minutes. Will keep there heat lamp on in the pen and get a nice warm towell out of the airing cupboard for when they go back in.

Definately pictures tomorrow if weather is nice enough to go out.

Thanks for the advice. I know  can always rely on you.

I got mine out in the first week when it was warm and sunny.

Just keep an eye on them and if they start huddling together or shivering get them in the warm.

Vember's right about the predators. I lost 2 14 day old ducklings to magpies and was heartboken   Learn by my mistakes!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Maybe i will let them run around in the living room instead at least I only have to clean up poo then. Couldnt bear to loose any of them.

As long as you are out there they will be fine but I got a rabbit run thing and put them it that if I was going to leave them for any length of time.

I'll get my dad down as well to watch them. so perhaps between me, my dad and the dog watching we can keep a very safe eye, And the bottom lawn isnt massive. perhaps five foot by five foot.

I have all this planned now and I bet it will be cold and horrible tomorrow. If it is they can have an inside run around with a small paddling pool. Cover carpet with as many towels as I can find.

Are they allowed to get completely wet only if inside? The pool is only about 2 inches deep but can imagine they are going to go quackers. They will have the heat lamp on standby and warm towels to dry off.

Which ever way I will take pictures.

I put warm in yes
I had it about 4 inches at plug end to begin with, once they're in you'll be
able to tell if they'll be ok with more :D

Have Fun

Bath's much easier to clean out too

I had mine in it from a couple of days. With supervision, a little warm water and only for a few minutes. Once they get the hang of it they like swimming under water so get soaked through very quickly.
