What bush is this?

The fruits are quite sour. Doesn't always fruit. The leaves are really painful. Need very very thick gloves.

It looks like a Mahonia, but I could be wrong.  If it is, then the berries are supposed to be edible, but very sour.

Possibly M japonica... the long bunches of fruits look like that

Looks like mahonia to me too, does it have yellow flowers?
Yes yellow flowers but doesn't always fruit. Small birds and field mice appear to collect nectar from the flowers.

gosh! I inherited one of these when I bought my house 15 years ago...I didn't realise the berries were edible but they do provide lots of food for the other (none paying) residents in my garden :D

im not that keen on it TBH but it provides a covering for a brick wall that I don't want to see, so I put up with it.
i may take a bite to see if i like the fruit now..... :lol:

Blackbirds pick them on the wing in the winter, if they fruit late. Unusually early this year. Not seen any other birds bother with them other than small birds and field mice sticking there heads in the flowers.
