Title: Caring for newly hatched chicks..SO excited !!!
Post by: Chuckiemum on March 20, 2010, 21:02
I got some hatching eggs for my broody bantie and she has been the best mum ever! She is so good and isn't too bothered about being made to go out for a walk in the morning either !
She had 9 eggs and now after candling them we are down to 6 ...they are due on tuesday and I'm wondering if there is anything I need to do to/for them in regards to vaccinations, worming, etc....
I just want to make sure they are given 5* treatment as the kids are so enjoying the experience and we love our chickens...!!!
Also I need to provide them with chick crumbs...ok for mum to have that as well, right? I have another bantie in with her...she is like a surrogate mum already !  so will the other bantie be ok to eat the chick crumbs as well.

mum will be fine on chick crumbs as well. are the chick crumbs medicated or not? if they are (against coccidiosis) then do not eat any of the eggs laid by the surrogate mum if she is eating this food.
Vaccinations come in doses of 1000 usually so not really an option for backyard poultry keepers.

Chickiemum, I've been wondering the same thing for my chick's. At what age should you be worming/dusting for lice ? Also at what age can you give treats. Are there any sort of tonics to give them a boost and keep them healthy ? Hope the births go well Chickiemum !  :D
