Back on topic, my money is on slugs as the culprit.

  Oh I suppose all those overpriced sprays that come in fancy containers,that say they re just the job are safe! are they.If ant killer is so bad we shouldnt be using around the house,where kids and pets come into contact with it.I dare say the commercial grower uses things much more harmful than ant killer,on the crops he sells to us,in the cause of fairness you should print this reply,and let people make their own minds up

My reply just agreed with David; that misusing chemicals was foolish when there are so many other ways of countering the problem.

I agree, it is probably slugs, try and distract them with a few saucers of beer.

Slugs I would agree. I use the beer trap method and it is very effective. Even when there is no obvious signs of slugs those little soil dwellers appear and fill up my traps. I have seen previous arguements though that the beer actually attracts slugs to the area and therefore could be counter productive?. I wonder if anybody could clarify this arguement?
