Does anyone have experience of using direct burial cables to warm the soil?

I'm sure they work but are they expensive to run?

I have a 6mt one together with a thermostat,the bed i made myself,it works very satisfactorily,however i cant tell you exactly what it costs,though i think it is fairly reasonable.

Cost of running  a lightbulb.I use one every year , and air warming cables, round the edges of a box of fuschias in the winter.Start lots of stuff off,providing you have light and check watering.You can bury the cable in sand or space it out and cover with a board with holes regularly spaced to ventilate heat.With a thermostat you can maintain the right temp using a day and night thermometer.Make your own plastic cover and you have a huge propagator.

as said above, its about the same as running a light bulb. use a thermostat so its not on constantly very usefull for the serious veg/ornamental grower.

this is my mates set up
he has 2 under the sand and 2 too warm the air,they are all 150w and controled from 2 themostats 1 for the air and the other for the sand,he is quite keen on flowers but he uses to bring veg on as you can see by his toms,all this kit was from two wests and the box was made from a sheet of ply i found in a skip.
he also has a mercury halide lamp over the box.
