Thin yolkless eggs
« on: July 25, 2012, 14:33 »
I have a hen who we aquired from someone. It looked like it had moulted but the feathers haven't grown back. When i recieved it, it took a couple of weeks to settle then started laying fine. But for a couple of months now she has been laying thin eggs, and are so thin at one end they are practically transparent. Also they are yolkless.
They free range all day and have plenty of layers and water. I have wormed etc but no change. I have kept hens succesfully for the past 4.5 years.

Any idea what could be wrong and what I should do? Has anyone had something similar?

Thanks, Emma

do you know how old she is and what breed? She could be coming to the end of her laying. Do your hens have access to crushed oyster shell at all times?
Staffies are softer than you think.

I don't know how old she is, but she wasn't well looked after. Don't know breed but looks like the type they use as battery.
They do have access to oyster shell, but to be honest don't seem to bothere with it, none of my hens ever have.

Hmm... sounds to me like she is just about done laying altogether.

Well done for taking her in and looking after her :)

I've got one who's started laying eggs like that. She's 3 1/2 so I'm assuming she's just coming to the end of her egg laying. Other than the funny eggs she's fine. Hopefully yours will recover soon, maybe when she's feeling better with some TLC the quality of eggs may improve.
