Very swollen back end
« on: July 21, 2012, 21:50 »
I hope somebody can help me. One of my chickens was very quiet today stood in a corner and looking very sad-she had a lot of yellow goo all around her bottom, so I sat her in a warm bowl of water to wash her off and noticed that her back end seemed really swollen, from just behind her leggs up towards her bottom. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem. I have had them for 2 years, 4 normal brown chickens and I am getting 2 eggs a day.

It sounds as if she has been laying internally.  This is where the yolk falls out of hte oviduct and rests in the abdominal cavity.

The yellow goo could be a yolk form a broken egg, or it could be the first sign of egg yolk peritonitis.

You might want to get her checked by a vet.

At over two years old your hens will be coming to they end of their laying life, and EYP is a common problem with production red hens, unfortunately.

Casey76 you were right. Took her to vets and she confirmed peritonitus. gave her antibiotics, but no improvement next day, so sad to say we took the decision to put her out of her misery and had her put down at the vets. Very expensive do-
