hello

i bought onion sets and the packet just states to plant out in the autumn, no specific month, the broad beans reckon to plant in autumn too but state october, is october the best month or is that too early?

hope you guys can help

I am in dorset and I have my onions and garlic in the ground, agree with gobs about the broad beans you dont want them to tall to face the winter.

Ive already got broad beans in pots in the greenhouse, they havent come up yet.

my onion sets arrived yesterday for autumn planting - the only spare space suitable that does not get too waterlogged at present is where some spuds have been - I have no well rotted stuff to dig in before i plant  -will pelleted chicken manure do for the onions- i would imagine spuds have taken all goodness  - any help welcome

I would like to have a go at some onions, is there a good type to try?, i was just looking on e bay and theres a few to pick from.  I dont think i'll plant 50 as they need to be planted about 6" apart - will the un-used ones keep until next year?

Thats 6 per yard or 7 per metre = 36 per square yard or 49 per square metre.

You sure you cant find two square yards  of spare land ?


Having said that. ive got spare ones, anyone close to lincoln want 75 autumn onion sets free?

No, they don't keep. They want planting    Good weather at the moment for planting stuff. I shall be doing a bag this afternoon and planting them where I just removed the spuds, as I don't dig and this bit is now quite friable.  I put a sprinkling of general fertiliser on last week in readiness. I think it's Growmore.  The soil would benefit from being moistened first so planting after a rain shower would be a good idea.  Guess I'll just have to water the rows first.

I've only grown Radar, Sturon, Turbo and Swift and they've all done fine

I left my broad beans until November last year and it was a bit late.  I had to replant a lot of  them in early spring.  I planting my BB in October this year.  Onions and shallots too  :!:

Same here with Broad beans, Onion sets haven't arrived  yet from Marshalls,
so will probably go in the same time, and I read somewhere Garlic should be planted 11/11th???
