potato chits multi stems
« on: March 25, 2013, 23:03 »
All my potataoes are chitting away very nicely, although 2 of my 9 varieties - swift and maris bard are each sending up between 3 and 6 sprouts. I have seen on the forum before to reduce these to 1 or 2.
What are the advantages of reducing the sprouts and any disadvantages to just leaving them as they are.

Thanks
Dmg

It is said that few chits give you larger, but fewer spuds.

Personally I always leave them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you do reduce them , take out the middle shoot's and leave the shoot's on the side's. Use a teaspoon to dig under the shoot. Like DD i leave them all, and 5-6 shoot's is not un-commom.

If your a bit tight fisted like myself, I spilt the potato with a knife so I end up with 2  for the price of one

Does it affect your harvest if you split the spud?

I've watched a gardener on YouTube split one potato into about 5 if it has enough eyes etc....

But they never mention the resulting harvest.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Not that I've noticed.

I once cut out plugs of spud each with an eye in, grew them on in pots but I lost them to a late frost, never got around to trying that experiment again.
