pumkins how do i know when they are ready

Good morning everyone
 i have managed to grow 2 pumpkins for the first time,they are about the size of a football,how do i know when they are ready to use?,i have never tried pumkin so what do i do with it :unsure:

Leave them on the plant a long as you can. I don't harvest mine until late September early October. If you take them before their time they wont be ripe inside. Just leave them be
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

It's very tempting to pick them now. I've managed to grow 5 pumpkins on two plants, of which 2 are whoppers!  They've all gone bright orange and I want to bring them home and admire them as the plant is completely dead and they are just sat on bricks in the patch - still attached to the plant.  I'm going to try and resist them though and leave them as long as I can!

If the plant is dead, you could pick them.  They are not growing any longer and the skins will continue to 'cure' and harden on or off the plant.

I agree...if the vine is dead, bring them on in, as one day you'll go out and find that a bug has drilled a hole through through and spoiled your pumpkin.
