Are my Onions Ready?
« on: July 08, 2008, 21:03 »
This is my first harvest so some advice please!

Some of my onions have bent over although the tops are still mostly green not yellow. Some of the others are still upright.

Should I harvest (a) all of them, (b) just those that have bent over or (c) leave all of them to topple over and go more yellow before harvesting?

Is it to late to plant more carrots in the space they leave, the slugs have had some of my others.

Thanks in advance

Okay - c it is, it's very difficult to know from what you read.

On another note last nite I despatched 14 slugs. Tip of the iceberg though I'm sure..........

Make sure your carrot is not a long season main crop though.

I'd use something else, Nantes types, for example , widely available.

I think I would leave your onions to ripen (skins turn golden) and tops wither, unless it stays very wet and the foliage starts to develop mildew. If that happens, I'd lift them and get them under cover.

I had this problem last year after that awful wet spell and mildew set in with avengence. I lifted them and created a 'hammock' out of old plastic fencing and put all the onions upside down (threaded the foliage down through the holes so the bulbs were uppermost) and they stored fine.
